NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old pedestrian was killed after being run over by a speeding car on Ring Road in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area early Friday morning, police said.
The accused driver was identified as 19-year-old Daksh Maurya, a resident of Shalimar Bagh in northwest Delhi, according to news agency PTI.
According to police, the victim, whose identity is yet to be established, was found lying unconscious in the middle of the road near the Marble Market on Ring Road, on the carriageway from Rajouri Garden towards Mayapuri.
"A PCR call reporting the accident was received at Rajouri Garden police station around 3:40 am, following which local police rushed to the spot. The injured man was found unresponsive, and no identity documents were recovered from him," a senior police officer said.
The injured man was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police said efforts are underway to establish the deceased’s identity and trace his family members.
The body has been preserved at the DDU Hospital mortuary for identification and postmortem, officials said.
During the investigation, the PCR caller, identified as Gulshan, informed police that he had spotted a damaged vehicle parked on the roadside around 250 metres from the accident site.
Acting on the information, police searched the area and found the suspected vehicle — a golden-brown Honda City bearing a Delhi registration number — abandoned on the roadside. The car has been seized for forensic examination and further investigation.
"Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused. The teams have been deployed, and raids are being conducted at possible locations," the officer said.
An FIR has been registered under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Rajouri Garden police station.
Police are also scanning CCTV footage from Ring Road and nearby areas to reconstruct the sequence of events and ascertain the speed and movement of the vehicle before the collision.
