Soon, traffic challans can be paid digitally on the spot
New Delhi: Paying traffic challans in Delhi is set to become faster and more convenient, with Delhi Traffic Police rolling out upgraded digital payment and e-enforcement systems across the city.
Under the new system, commuters can pay traffic challans on the spot using multiple digital payment options, including UPI, debit cards and credit cards, through handheld devices carried by traffic personnel. In addition to current violations, even pending challans can now be cleared digitally with the assistance of on-duty officers.
To support the initiative, Delhi Traffic Police is distributing around 1,500 new e-challan machines among field officers across the capital. The upgraded devices come with features such as instant challan generation, faster payment processing, vehicle and violator photography, and improved digital record management. The machines can also send automated SMS alerts to vehicle owners if their vehicle is towed.
In a move to expand digital accessibility, the e-challan system has also been integrated with the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS). This will allow citizens to pay both pending and current compoundable challans through any UPI-enabled mobile application, making the process more seamless and widely accessible.
Officials said the initiative aims to improve transparency in traffic enforcement while making the system more citizen-friendly.
