New Delhi: Six people were rescued after a fire broke out at a five-storey residential building in northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar on Sunday evening. A man also sustained injuries in the blaze, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said.
According to DFS, a call regarding the incident was received around 9.45 pm, following which six fire tenders, along with 35 firefighters, were dispatched to the spot. Fire officials said the blaze was brought under control by 11.10 pm.
The injured man was identified as
Pawan Kumar (32), who suffered approximately 25-30% burn injuries. He was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Those rescued from the building have been identified as Nitu Singh (50), Harshit (17), Ranu Devi (85), Meena Shukla (65) and Rohit Shukla. Firefighters managed to evacuate the five occupants of the building safely. They are all family members.
A DFS official said, “The front side was safe with only smoke and heat. However, the fire had spread vertically across the rooms on the back side, where the only staircase was located, posing a challenge to the rescue operation.” The residents were rescued using a ladder from the balconies on the front side, the official added.
The fire had reportedly spread to domestic articles and documents stored across the first, second and third floors of the building. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
