New Delhi: Family members of Mohammad Moeen Khan were inconsolable as neighbours thronged their home in Jamia Nagar. Khan's daughter Iqra had been insisting since last week that the NDMC estate officer stop going to office after receiving threats to his life in The Connaught hotel eviction case. Relatives said that Khan, however, insisted he wouldn't create controversies with retirement looming large in his plans.
Mohammad Saqib, a relative, recalled that Khan had returned home looking worried on Saturday evening and shared news of the threats with his wife. "I asked him to approach the police, but he refused," said Saqib. "He said his conscience was clear and told me he depended on God to protect him."
Nishaad, Khan's wife, knew that her husband was planning to bring the case regarding The Connaught to a conclusion and had prepared his files accordingly. "However," she told police in her statement, "there was someone passing on information about his plans due to which the accused knew about his movements."
Khan was a family man, who was looking forward to his elder daughter completing her medical studies. He had planned to construct a room at their Noor Nagar house as a doctor's chamber. He was also helping his wife out of the shock of losing her father and brother earlier this year. "He would make it a point to return home early so that Nishaad had company while the children studied," said M A Khan, a relative.
Khan had shifted to Delhi from his ancestral home in Pratapgarh after completing his LLB from Allahabad University. He also had a master's degree in political science. His father, Naseer Khan, used to be a social activist and a village sarpanch. Khan was inspired to take up a job with NDMC by his uncle, a financial advisor with the municipal body.
