Delhi: First jammed gate of the ITO Barrage has been opened, says CM Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and LG VK Saxena on Friday inspected various locations, including a spot at Vikas Bhawan where a drain regulator was damaged. Waters from the raging Yamuna river and heavy rains have thrown normal life out of gear in Delhi. Kejriwal said that water entered different areas due to different reasons and people will start getting relief soon. Meanwhile, traffic movement was also affected at several places due to severe water logging. Officials at Hathnikund Barrage said that Friday could see more floodwaters seeping into the national capital.The city is also staring at a drinking water shortage following the closure of three water treatment plants -- Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla. Meanwhile, schools and colleges will remain shut till July 16.

The water flow rose following heavy rain in the river's catchment area in Himachal and Uttarakhand. When a huge volume of water began to reach the barrage, as per the SOP, all 18 barrage floodgates were opened from June 9. The flow gradually increased from 70,000 cusecs to a maximum of 3. 5 lakh cusecs on July 11.

Warning from Hathnikund: It may get worse today for Delhi

Officials at Hathnikund Barrage said on Thursday that Friday could see more floodwaters seeping into the national capital.

“It takes 72 hours for water to reach from Hathnikund to NCR and a maximum amount of water 3. 5 lakh cusec was released on Tuesday. So, technically, the maximum impact could be seen in Delhi on Friday. There is another prediction of rainfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal from July 16,” said Sandeep Kumar, executive engineer posted at Water Services Division (Dadupur) of Yamuna Nagar district in Haryana, where administrative control of the barrage lies.

The DDMA has decided to keep schools and colleges and government offices engaged in non-essential work closed till Sunday while advising private entities to work from home. It also directed business establishments around Kashmere Gate to be closed till the situation improved.

Yamuna water level likely to rise

The water level at the Old Railway Bridge at 8 pm was 208. 66 metres, three metres above the danger level. Central Water Commission (CWC) said that between 2am and 4am on Friday, the level was expected to fall to 208. 45 metres after which it was likely to decrease gradually.

Continuous water discharge from the Hathnikund barrage in Yamuna Nagar district of Haryana on Thursday led to the worst flooding in the capital in 45 years. The water began flowing into some of Delhi’s main arteries like Ring Road and GT Karnal Road and inundated the residential area of Civil Lines and transport hub ISBT at Kashmere Gate besides the low-lying areas near Kalindi Kunj.
