Delhi cop under scanner in extortion linked to Lawrence gang

New Delhi: Police will initiate a departmental inquiry against an assistant sub-inspector whose suspected involvement is being probed in a Rs 2-crore extortion case targeting the managing director of a private firm in Haryana.

Police sources said he had served as the personal assistant to a DCP (west) but was later relieved from the district for transfer to another district. “He did not report to the new posting and has been missing since. A departmental inquiry will be initiated, and a show-cause notice will be issued to him. Further action will be taken thereafter,” the source added.

The incident came to light on April 16, when the businessman alleged that he received a WhatsApp call from a person claiming to be a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The caller allegedly demanded Rs 5 crore as “protection money” and threatened to harm the businessman and his family if the demand was not met.

Police said the complainant later paid Rs 2 crore to the accused in Rohini. Subsequently, he allegedly received another threatening call demanding additional money, following which a case was registered at Bahadurgarh police station in Haryana.

During inquiry his role had surfaced and he had filed for anticipatory bail in a court in Haryana which was rejected.

“The applicant/accused has played active role in the commission of the alleged offence, “ court order read. The order added it is specifically alleged that the applicant-accused was having direct nexus with the other co-accused persons and hatched a criminal conspiracy with them.
