ROORKEE: A truck driver allegedly ran over and killed his friend after he was angered by the latter's lewd remarks about his nieces. The accused fled after the incident and was arrested on Thursday.
The accused, Rajeev (45), from Baghpat district, lived for several years in Ruhalki village under Bhagwanpur police limits with his family. Rajeev owned a truck, which he drove himself for a living.
During this period, he became friends with Rahul Kumar (40), who worked as a cook at a roadside eatery in Bhagwanpur. The two often consumed alcohol together. Over time, Rahul also started visiting Rajeev's house.
Police said Rahul often passed objectionable comments about Rajeev's nieces. The matter escalated on March 4, the day of Holi, when Rajeev allegedly called Rahul to Bhagwanpur toll plaza, telling him that his truck was parked there and inviting him to celebrate the festival together. Rahul arrived at the spot with food, and the two drank alcohol and ate together.
However, during the drinking session, Rahul again began making remarks about Rajeev's nieces. Police said Rajeev initially objected but, when Rahul did not stop, he asked him to get down from the truck. As Rahul stepped out, Rajeev allegedly ran him over, killing him on the spot.
Rahul's wife filed a complaint at Bhagwanpur police station on Wednesday. "We arrested Rajeev along with the truck. During questioning, he confessed, indicating that the act was intentional. A case of murder was registered against him," said SSP Navneet Singh Bhullar.
