Rudrapur: The Special Task Force (STF), in a joint operation with the Udham Singh Nagar Police, recovered a cache of illegal firearms, ammunition and forged documents from a vehicle in Kashipur, officials said on Wednesday.
Acting on a tip-off, the STF intercepted a car in the Katora Tal area late on Monday night and seized four firearms -- a 12-bore pump-action shotgun, a .22-bore semi-automatic rifle, a .32-bore semi-automatic pistol and a .32-bore revolver. The team also recovered 237 live cartridges of various calibres, four magazines and seven allegedly forged arms licences.
The seizure was made during the investigation of a case registered at the Kashipur police station on June 4 following the verification of arms licences transferred to Uttarakhand from other states. STF officials said the recovered weapons, forged licences and the vehicle were linked to three accused from Kashipur, against whom further legal proceedings are underway.
SSP (STF) Ajay Singh said three cases had so far been registered in connection with the fake arms licence racket and five accused had already been sent to jail.
“Fake arms licences pose a serious threat to national security, public peace, and law and order. Uttarakhand Police is pursuing a zero-tolerance policy against such offences,” he said.
