100-day river revival drive launched in Doon under Swachh Bharat Mission
Dehradun: Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has launched a "100 Days One Mission – Reviving Our Rivers" campaign under the Swachh Bharat Mission aimed at cleaning and rejuvenating rivers and drains across the city. The initiative, inaugurated on Sunday by mayor Saurabh Thapliyal and municipal commissioner Namami Bansal, will run for the next 100 days and focus on removing rubbish, clearing silt and conducting regular cleaning operations along various large and medium drains and riverbanks across the city. Officials said the campaign also includes awareness activities to ensure pollution-free water bodies ahead of the monsoon season.Commissioner Bansal appealed to residents to cooperate with the administration. "Our appeal to the citizens is not to throw rubbish, plastic or construction debris in rivers, drains and public places, and to cooperate with the administration in keeping the city's water bodies clean. Building a clean, healthy, and beautiful Dehradun is possible only with the participation of citizens," she said.In the first phase of the drive, clean-up operations began in the Sattowali Valley, Bhandari Bagh and along the banks of the Rispana river.
Heavy machinery, including earthmovers and tractor-trolleys, was deployed to remove accumulated debris. Municipal solid waste and plastic waste were the primary pollutants that were removed and disposed of, with officials noting that the effort reduced pollution while maintaining the natural flow of rivers. The campaign also honoured sanitation workers for their dedication. On the occasion of International Women's Day, the mayor and commissioner felicitated the municipal corporation's chief sanitation inspector and female sanitation workers for their significant contributions to maintaining cleanliness in the city.
