Two men arrested for robbing Sulur woman of gold chain
COIMBATORE: The Sulur police in Coimbatore district have arrested two men who attacked a woman on her head with a hammer and robbed her of her gold chain. The police recovered the gold chain weighing four sovereigns and seized a country made gun and 18 live rounds from them. The police arrested another man who had helped the duo procure the country made gun.The arrested men have been identified as R Gunasekaran, 62, of Manalmedu in Karur and L Vijayakumar Sani, 22, and R Vikram Kumar, 25, of Bihar.Preliminary inquiries revealed that Gunasekaran and Vijayakumar consumed alcohol on Aug 28 evening and later visited a grocery shop at SVL Nagar in Sulur. They asked the shopkeeper S Mary Juliana, 56, to give them a chips packet. When the woman tried to take the packet, the duo assaulted her on her head with a hammer and robbed her of four sovereigns of gold chain. On hearing Mary’s screams, neighbours came to her rescue. They sent her to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment.The Sulur police registered a case and formed a special team to nab the robbers. Following a tip-off, the police traced the whereabouts of the suspects and rushed to Rasipalayam, where they were staying, and arrested the duo on Aug 29.
Police also seized a gun with 18 bullets from their room. Upon questioning, it was revealed that Gunasekaran, who had been working in Andhra Pradesh for more than 20 years, befriended Vikram and his friend Vijayakumar Sani of Bihar, who were also working in Andhra Pradesh. Gunasekaran bought a country-made pistol with 18 bullets from Bihar with the help of Vikram for Rs 20,000. The police arrested Vikram.Police said Gunasekaran and Vijayakumar joined as security guards in a private firm near Sulur three months ago. The duo were staying in a rental room in Rasipalayam in Sulur. A police officer said that Gunasekaran had bought a gun illegally for his safety and had not used the gun.
