Sewage treatment plant to be set up near Coimbatore airport

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City Corporation has planned to set up a sewage treatment plant (STP) to treat wastewater that a stream carries through the international airport here.

The stream flows along the Avinashi Road to reach the southern side of the Coimbatore International Airport’s compound wall. It then flows through the airport premises and Kolathur before ending at Achankulam. It carries solid waste which is filtered by a grill fixed on the airport compound wall before it enters the airport premises.

According to the corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran, a 2-3 million litre per day capacity STP would be set up with corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds to treat the wastewater the stream carries. The corporation has identified 29 cents of land for the purpose. However, the site is yet to be approved by the Airport Authority of India (AAI).

Earlier, the corporation was in talks with the AAI to jointly establish an STP. However, due to various administrative reasons, the corporation is now moving forward to establish it through CSR funds.
