Namakkal: A 27-year-old man was arrested on Sunday, for sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl near Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district on Saturday. The arrested has been identified as a mason from Salem district.
Police said the girl, a daughter of a bakery worker who lives in Kumarapalayam, went missing while playing near her house on Saturday night. She returned crying a short while later, with blood stains on her clothes. Her parents took her to the Kumarapalayam Government Hospital, where doctors confirmed that she had been sexually abused. They filed a complaint with the Kumarapalayam police.

Namakkal district SP S Vimala formed 10 special teams to arrest the accused, after they identified him when checking CCTV cameras in the locality. Meanwhile, some locals in Chinnappa Nayakkanpalayam near Kumarapalayam, spotted him, as his image had been widely circulated. They beat him and tied his hands before alerting the police. On confirming his identity, police secured him and brought him to the station.
However, as word spread of his arrest, more than a hundred people gathered in front of the station and blocked it in protest, leading to a major traffic jam in the area for about half an hour. DSP Gauthaman and inspector TA Dhavamani held talks with the protesters and assured them of appropriate action, after which the crowd dispersed.
Police later produced the accused before the sub-court in Kumarapalayam and lodged him at the Salem central prison under judicial custody. A case was registered and further investigation is on.
