COIMBATORE: Coimbatore district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar on Sunday unveiled the logo of ‘Naan Uyir Kavalan,’ Coimbatore's largest road safety campaign. The Coimbatore district administration, the city police and UYIR (an NGO working on road safety) are jointly organizing the road safety campaign in the city from Oct 6 to make it a zero-accident zone.
Giriyappanavar said the accident rates in the city are decreasing every year. “Our ultimate goal is to make Coimbatore an accident-free district in the state. In this road safety model city project, we aim to reach out to a large public. Officers have been instructed to place awareness boards at ration shops, and transport department officers have been guided to spread awareness about this event to all drivers' associations. The whole idea behind this huge initiative is to encourage collective responsibility and community-driven action to create a meaningful public movement to put an end to road accidents,” he added.
The logo was unveiled at an event held in a private college in Nava India. Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran and UYIR Trust managing trustee Dr S Rajasekaran were present.
Rajasekaran said the campaign would focus on reaching a wide public to create mass awareness.
From Oct 6, an 'Accident-Free Week' campaign and a pledge by 10 lakh people would be held. During this week-long campaign, many awareness programs and competitions related to road safety will be conducted.
"In India, one individual dies in road accidents every few minutes. Tamil Nadu is among the top three states with the highest number of road accidents. On the road, one person's mistake can take someone else's life. So, it's everyone's responsibility to be safe on the road. Each and every one should ensure that they follow road rules," said Rajasekaran.
Sivaguru Prabhakaran said that 100% cooperation would be provided from the city corporation to support this initiative as it would help save lives.
