Gang decamps with Rs 6 lakh gold from expo

COIMBATORE: A group consisting of four women and two men decamped with a 23.5-sovereign

necklace worth more than Rs 6lakh displayed at a jewellery

held at Residency Towers on Avinashi Road here on Saturday.


The group had arrived at the venue in an autorickshaw, police sources said. “Temple jewellery, uncut diamonds jewellery collections and various type of gold jewellery were displayed in more than 30 stalls at the United Exhibitions Jewellery Expo. Two women and a man entered the hall to divert the attention of the stall keepers. While they kept the organisers busy, the other three took the necklace. All of them managed to leave the place without detection,” a police officer said.

The stall keepers found the necklace missing after some time. They alerted the organisers, who checked CCTV footage and found the six suspects.

Race Course (crime) police inspector P Mohanraj reached the spot and held inquiry with the organisers. “We have collected the CCTV footage, which shows the suspects, who posed as visitors. All of them were well-dressed. We suspect that they might be from the northern part of the country,” the inspector told TOI.

Race Course police registered a case and formed special teams to nab the culprits.

Police have sent the CCTV footage and photographs of the suspects to police stations across the state.
