CHENNAI: The

Tamil Nadu government

will introduce

fresh legislation to ban online rummy

in the state, following a directive from

chief minister M K Stalin

, state law minister

S Raghupathy

said here on Wednesday.


The development comes in the wake of the Madras high court on Tuesday ruling against the existing legislation introduced last November to ban online rummy.

A statement from the government said chief minister Stalin, when he was the Leader of the Opposition, had demanded banning online rummy.
The then

AIADMK government

had hurriedly passed legislation and banned online rummy in Tamil Nadu.

A petition was moved against the legislation in the Madras high court. On Tuesday the court ruled against the legislation citing a lack of clarity on why the state introduced a blanket ban on the online game. The court had however said there is no bar on the state from bringing fresh legislation,

observed.

Soon after the court order, the chief minister directed to bring fresh legislation, with ample clarity behind the government's move, to ban online rummy in the state, law minister Raghupathy said in a statement.
