Tamil Nadu rains: IndiGo issues travel advisory for flight disruptions to/from Chennai, Tuticorin, Madurai

IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory for flight disruptions in Chennai, Tuticorin, and Madurai due to severe weather. A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is intensifying into a cyclonic storm, bringing heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu. The IMD issued alerts, including a red alert for several districts, predicting continued rain through Thursday.

NEW DELHI: IndiGo Airlines has released a travel advisory regarding flight disruptions to and from Chennai, Tuticorin, and Madurai due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.
The airline also extended its gratitude to passengers for their patience and expressed hope for a quick resolution to the challenges.
"#6ETravelAdvisory: Due to adverse weather conditions, flights to/from #Chennai, #Tuticorin, and #Madurai continue to be impacted, while #Tiruchirappalli and #Salem might now also be affected," IndiGo posted on X.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has been moving northwards at a speed of 10 kmph. As of 11.30pm IST on Tuesday, the system was centered near latitude 7.5°N and longitude 82.6°E, approximately 190 km southeast of Trincomalee, 470 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 580 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 670 km south-southeast of Chennai.
The IMD forecasts that the system will likely intensify into a
cyclonic storm on Wednesday and continue moving north-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast, skirting Sri Lanka over the following two days.
On Tuesday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai confirmed the depression's intensification into a deep depression and its expected development into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday.
Since Tuesday morning, Chennai and its surrounding areas have experienced widespread rainfall. The IMD has predicted intermittent heavy rains until Thursday, November 28. "Yesterday's depression will intensify into a deep depression. It is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm and move towards the north direction, towards the Tamil Nadu coast," said S. Balachandran, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, in a statement to ANI.
The IMD has issued multiple alerts for Tamil Nadu, including a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in three central districts on November 26 and two districts on November 27. Chennai is under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall from November 27 to 29, while Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet districts are on yellow and orange alerts from November 27 to 30.
Rainfall has also been reported in Chennai's suburbs. The IMD predicts light to moderate rain in many areas with occasional thunderstorms and lightning over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 27. On November 28, coastal Tamil Nadu is expected to see rain at many places, while interior regions will experience rain at a few locations.
