Chennai: Strict action will be taken against establishments that fail to grant paid leave to employees on April 23, the polling day in the state, the labour commissioner said in a release on Saturday.On the instructions of the Election Commission of India, all employers in the state — including industrial establishments, IT companies, shops and commercial establishments, food chains, plantations, motor transport undertakings and unorganised sector entities — must grant a paid holiday to all their employees and workers, including daily-wage, temporary and contract workers.

To address complaints, the labour department has established control rooms at both state and district levels. Workers and the public can lodge complaints with the state-level control room officials by contacting 79046 46090, 72990 07334, 79048 02429 and 90435 55123. Complaints can also be made to the respective assistant commissioners of labour (enforcement) at the district level.tnn
