CHENNAI: During his interrogation by CB-CID, Krishnamoorthy is said to have stonewalled all questions, saying he was innocent and he was being tried by media for no fault of his.
However, sources said, agriculture department chief engineer M Senthil Kumar admitted during his interrogation that he had put pressure on Muthukumarasamy to collect money from seven driver recruits for the minister.
When Muthukumarasamy resisted, he was threatened with dire consequences like departmental action, interrogators were told. Krishnamoorthy, apparently, never talked to Muthukumarasamy directly.
Even when CB-CID officials confronted Krishnamoorthy with Senthil Kumar’s confession, he continued with his resistance. Finally, around 8pm on Saturday the sleuths decided they had no other alternative than arresting him since he was not cooperating with the investigation.
After recording his arrest, they asked him whether he would like to talk to anybody. He wanted to get in touch with a brother, who is a lawyer. As the lawyer did not attend the call, Krishnamoorthy called another brother, a serving deputy superintendent of police in Salem, and conveyed the message that he was in CB-CID custody.
The arrest should have happened a week ago, but it was postponed as CB-CID took some time to gather actionable evidence to nail the former minister, sources said. Moreover, director general of police Ashok Kumar was very particular that unless CB-CID had a fool-proof case against Krishnamoorthy, he should not be arrested. Finally, DGP gave clearance for the arrest on Saturday morning.
