EV registrations cross 2 lakh units for 4th straight month in Jan
Chennai: The new year has begun on a strong note for India's electric vehicle industry, with total battery-electric vehicle registrations crossing the 2 lakh mark in Jan. Notably, EV registrations have exceeded 2 lakh units for the fourth consecutive month, despite lower GST rates on ICE vehicles since Oct 2025.
Total registrations of battery-powered vehicles (across all segments) stood at 2.18 lakh units in January this year, compared with 1.71 lakh units in Jan 2025 and 2.03 lakh units in Dec 2025.
Easing magnet availability and improved production supported higher volumes, pushing electric two-wheeler registrations to around 1.22 lakh units last month—the third-highest monthly tally in the past 12 months—compared with 98,000 units in Dec 2025 and 98,426 units in Jan 2025.
E2W segment leader TVS Motor's monthly e-scooter volumes touched close to the 35,000-unit mark (34,896 units), widening the gap with rival and second-largest player Bajaj Auto, which clocked 25,798 units during the month. Ather's volumes were at 22,135 units, while Hero MotoCorp's sales stood at 13,436 units. Ola Electric registrations were at 7,610 units.
Total registrations of electric passenger vehicles (including e-cars and e-SUVs) stood at 18,101 units in Jan 2026, compared with 15,685 units in Dec 2025 and 11,895 units in Jan 2025.
Segment leader Tata Motors sold about 7,900 units in Jan, followed by JSW MG Motor at 4,622 units and Mahindra at 3,603 units. All others were in the sub-1,000-unit category, with VinFast leading the group with sales of 432 units.
Electric three-wheeler volumes (including e-rickshaws) were higher at 75,764 units last month when compared with 59,930 units in Jan 2025, but lower than the 88,277 units recorded in Dec 2025.
