Cyclone Fengal Highlights: Puducherry declares holiday for schools, colleges amid heavy rain
Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported. Coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of Andhra Pradesh are witnessing heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The IMD stated that the cyclone, located over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is moving west-northwestward at 7 km/h. As of 11:30 PM on November 29, it was approximately 210 km southeast of Chennai and 210 km east of Puducherry. Wind speeds of 70-80 km/h, gusting to 90 km/h, are expected during landfall.
Authorities have issued warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining Andhra Pradesh districts, including Nellore, Tirupati, and Chittoor. Coastal regions have already reported rainfall and wind speeds reaching 70 km/h.

Cyclone Fengal Live: Rainfall causes widespread power outages
Residents in Chennai and its suburban areas reported widespread power interruptions as heavy rainfall intensified on Saturday morning. While many consumers complained about prolonged power outages lasting several hours, officials from Tangedco clarified that there were no major failures in the distribution network. The disruptions were attributed to tripping feeders and flashing insulators, which were mostly resolved within a few hours.
In central Chennai, areas such as Choolaimedu, Kilpauk, Kodambakkam, and Vadapalani experienced power cuts throughout the morning, though most other regions remained unaffected. However, southern suburbs including Nanmangalam, Selaiyur, Madipakkam, Kovilambakkam, Pallikaranai, Perungalathur, Chromepet, Velachery, Siruseri, and Kandigai faced extended outages.
Additionally, other affected areas included Ponneri, Minjur, Santhoshapuram, Pozhichalur, Red Hills, Pattabiram, Pallavaram, Manjambakkam, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Vandalur, Mangadu, and Pudupakkam, where residents endured power cuts for several hours on Saturday.

Cyclone Fengal Live: Emergency teams mobilize amid heavy rain and tree falls
Fire and rescue officials handled 21 distress calls, including 11 reports of tree falls, between 12am and 12 noon on Saturday. Personnel monitored 197 low-lying areas that were inundated by the heavy rainfall.
The fire department’s control center recorded 10 calls for evacuation from flooded areas and requests to remove stagnated rainwater. Data revealed that four trees each were uprooted in Chennai's suburban areas and North Chennai, while three trees fell in South Chennai. No incidents of tree falls were reported in Central Chennai.

Cyclone Fengal Live: Cyclone Fengal could move slowly during landfall
The Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL” [pronounced as FEINJAL] over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 11.30am today about 100 km east-northeast of Puducherry, 100 km southeast of Chennai, 190 km north-northeast of Nagappattinam and 420 km north of Trincomalee.
It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during evening of November 30. There is a possibility of slow movement of the system while approaching the coast.

Cyclone Fengal: Migrant worker electrocuted in Chennai
A migrant worker was electrocuted after he came in contact with a snapped live cable at Muthialpet on Saturday. The deceased man was identified as Chandan, a native of Odisha. Police said Chandan, who was employed at a private showroom in Parrys, stayed at the residential quarters allotted to the workers. Chandan met his fate when he went to draw cash from an ATM kiosk near his house in Broadway. He walked closer to the platform to reach the ATM. As he pushed the ATM kiosk door, he lost control of himself and held an iron pole next to an EB post, unknowingly coming into contact with live power leaking from it.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecasted that intense rainfall will persist in the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday due to the impact of Cyclone Fengal.
According to the state weather department, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain at a few locations, is expected in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry today.
The IMD further predicts heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam districts, and Karaikal. Heavy rain is also expected in isolated areas of Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, and Karur districts.

Cyclone Fengal: Waterlogging reported in 134 locations in Chennai
Heavy rains in Chennai caused waterlogging in 134 locations across the city on Friday morning, with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) deploying 1,686 motor pumps to drain stagnant water.
IMD predicted "extremely heavy" rainfall in the union territory of Puducherry for today and "moderate" for December 2.
Cyclone Fengal that made landfall in the coasts of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu remains stationary for the last six hours close to the union territory nearly 30 kilometres north of Cuddalore and 40 kms east of Villupuram.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that as of 5.30am, the cyclone has not moved in the past six hours and remains stationary 120 kilometres south-southwest of Chennai.
Cyclone Fengal which crossed north Tamil Nadu coasts and made landfall in Puducherry on November 30 late night, the beaches in Chennai witnessed high tides and rough sea conditions.
The weather forecast issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) predicted "isolated heavy to very heavy" rainfall in Chennai for Sunday.
Cyclone Fengal brought 9–13 cm of rain to Chennai, causing four electrocution deaths and flooding in parts of the city.
IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rain for Chennai and nearby districts, with a red alert for Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore. While tree falls and minor disruptions occurred, major damage was avoided.
Public transport was minimal, and most residents stayed indoors due to weekend closures. The cyclone shifted its path south of Chennai, with landfall expected near Puducherry.
Fire and rescue officials received 21 distress calls, including 11 tree-fall incidents, from Saturday morning at 12 a.m. to 12 noon. Fire personnel monitored the 197 low-lying areas that were inundated due to the heavy downpour.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reviewed arrangements and precautionary measures on Saturday in the wake of Cyclone Fengal.
The Chief Minister also inspected the Chennai State Operation Center and was accompanied by state ministers KN Nehru and KKSSR Ramachandran.

The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, located about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours, as per the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.
It will move north-northwestwards, skirting the Sri Lanka coast, and is forecasted to cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts near Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the morning of November 30, with wind speeds of 50-60 km/h gusting to 70 km/h.
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for heavy rain as Cyclone Fengal approaches. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is conducting risk assessments and safety checks in vulnerable areas like T R Patinam and Karaikal.
The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, located 480km south-southeast of Chennai, is expected to weaken and make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on Saturday.
IMD has issued an orange alert for Chennai on Friday and a red alert for heavy rain on Saturday.
