Vigilance Bureau arrests ASI for accepting bribe of Rs 8,000

Jalandhar: The Vigilance Bureau on Monday arrested Punjab Police assistant sub inspector (ASI) Gopal Singh, posted at Division No 2 police station, for accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000.A VB spokesperson said that the police arrested the complainant's neighbour, Vijay Raj alias Pali, in a drug case on his complaint. Subsequently, the complainant — worked as an astrologer — visited the police station along with Vijay's sister and the locality president, Amit Kumar.
Two days later, the accused ASI called the complainant and warned him that if he did not come to the police station and meet him, his name would also be included in the said case. Thereafter, when the complainant's younger brother, Balwant, and the locality president met the accused ASI, the latter demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 for not implicating the complainant in the case, the VB spokesperson said.The deal was settled at Rs 20,000, and Rs 10,000 was paid to the accused. However, the accused remained insistent on the remaining bribe of Rs 10,000. After they expressed their inability to pay the remaining amount, the accused agreed to accept Rs 8,000 at a later stage. The complainant recorded the conversation regarding the demand for the bribe.On Monday, the VB team laid a trap, during which the accused ASI was arrested red-handed while accepting the bribe.
