Shimla: Chief minister
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday inaugurated the Nuclear Medicine Block at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, marking a major step towards strengthening advanced healthcare services in Himachal Pradesh.
The new facility enables patients to access Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan services within the state, reducing the need to travel outside for critical diagnostics. Sukhu said the PET scan facility allows early detection of diseases at metabolic and molecular levels, unlike conventional CT and MRI scans that identify structural changes at later stages. He highlighted its crucial role in cancer diagnosis, staging, treatment evaluation and detection of recurrence. The technology is widely used in managing cancers such as brain, lung, breast, colorectal, thyroid and gastrointestinal tumours, along with applications in cardiology, neurology and infectious diseases.
Reaffirming the govt's commitment to modernising healthcare, Sukhu said over Rs 3,000 crore would be invested to upgrade medical infrastructure across the state. He also announced Rs 8 crore for installing a SPECT-CT scan machine at IGMC. Health minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil (retd) and other senior officials were also present at the inauguration.
