Selja expresses concern over ‘deteriorating condition’ of farmers

Chandigarh: Sirsa MP and AICC general secretary Kumari Selja on Sunday expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of farmers in Haryana and urged the govt to take immediate corrective measures.Selja said despite producing crops, farmers were struggling to transport their produce to the mandis and were also not receiving timely payments. "April is a crucial period for farmers, yet they are being forced to protest on roads instead of working in fields," said the former Union minister, terming the situation a reflection of anti-farmer policies.She alleged that the MSP procurement system had been made unnecessarily complicated, causing both financial and mental stress to the farmers.Technical glitches in the ‘Meri Fasal Mera Byora' portal, along with requirements such as uploading tractor-trolley photographs, biometric verification and documentation, are creating hurdles, particularly for small and tenant farmers, said Selja.The Congress leader also highlighted the shortage of gunny bags in mandis and delays in lifting procured grains, leading to stockpiling while procurement continues at a slow pace.The promise of payment within 72 hours remains largely unfulfilled, worsening farmers' financial strain, said the senior leader.HPCC chief visits Samalkha grain market (BOX)Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Rao Narender Singh on Sunday visited the grain market at Samalkha and enquired about the problems faced by the farmers. The farmers highlighted issues such as a shortage of gunny bags, grain lying in the open, irregular weighing machines, and chaos during the loading and unloading process, said Rao Narender Sing.
