PATIALA: The police nabbed two bootleggers on Sunday under sections of Excise act after recovering around 450 boxes of illegal
country-made liquor from them.
The police revealed that one of the accused hails from Uttar Pradesh while another accused belong to Ropar district of Punjab. The police claimed that DSP Rajpura K K Panthey acting on a tip-off installed a police barrier on Rajpura –Chandigarh road and asked a truck to stop for the checking.
Police claimed that around 700 boxes of real juice were laid in the truck and the accused claimed they were supplying these juice boxes as part of their job but when frisked the police found 450 boxes of liquor underneath the boxes of juice boxes.
The estimated cost of the illegal liquor recovered is Rs 11 lakh in the market, said police.
The police said that the accused made attempt to escape but were overpowered by the police team present on the spot.
Police officials claimed that during interrogation both the accused have confessed their crime.
The police said that accused during interrogation not only confessed their crime but also revealed that a resident of Amritsar was a kingpin behind the illegal smuggling of liquor. The accused confessed they have been supplying liquor from last many months on his directions.
The case is registered under sections of cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property of the Indian Penal code besides the sections of excise act at Sadar Rajpura police station.
