CHANDIGARH: With the scrapping of the

entrance exam

by

Panjab University

, the 3,000 candidates who applied for enrolment in

various departments

for

research work

are clueless about their admission in the academic year 2020-21. This time round, the applicants who have applied for PhD entrance test are almost double than that of last year.

Sources said the university is trying to either conduct the entrance in December or January, as

PhD candidates

can be enrolled any time of the year, or enrol eligible candidates of the entrance test held last year, as the score is valid for two years.

V R Sinha, dean, research, of PU said the decision is yet to be taken. He said he will be calling a meeting of deans soon to discuss and finalise the enrolment process.

Officials of the university said every year almost 35% to 40% students clear the entrance examination for PhD but a

large number

of them fail to get admission due to various reasons. The proposal is also mooted that this year university should prepare a detailed report on the exact number of students who cleared PhD entrance were able to get supervisors to start their work.

Officials said every year the number of eligible students are increasing and those who fail to get admission in two years’ time span appear again for entrance after two years.
