NHAI plans underpass to link Ambala Cantt bus stand with rly stn
Ambala: Haryana transport minister Anil Vij on Thursday announced the proposal for a pedestrian underpass between bus stand and railway station in Ambala Cantonment, which is expected to benefit lakhs of daily commuters, railway passengers, and locals.
Vij said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sent its plan to the railways and Haryana Roadways for no objection certificates. The structure would pass through areas under their jurisdiction, and work would begin soon after the required clearances.
According to the NHAI plan, the underpass will start near the bus stand's GT Road-side exit gate and extend up to the railway station's escalator area. It will be 60 metres long and equipped with adequate lighting and other essential amenities. To prevent waterlogging, pump sets will also be installed for effective water disposal.
Vij said the project was approved following his request to Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari, who directed the NHAI to prepare and execute the plan.
Highlighting the importance of the project, Vij said Ambala Cantonment railway station is among the busiest in north India, handling lakhs of passengers every day. Similarly, the Ambala Cantt bus stand, located directly opposite the station on GT Road, serves thousands of passengers daily through hundreds of buses. Due to heavy traffic on the national highway, passengers and locals currently face inconvenience and safety risks while crossing the road between the two facilities.
The underpass, he said, will address this long-standing problem by ensuring safe and uninterrupted pedestrian movement without stepping onto the national highway.
