Jalandhar: Jalandhar Rural Police have arrested an alleged arms smuggler involved in procuring weapons from Uttar Pradesh and supplying them in Punjab. Five pistols and cartridges were recovered from his possession.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harvinder Singh Virk said acting on a tip-off, Suraj Kumar alias Ladi, a resident of Shekhewal village near Shahkot in Jalandhar district, was apprehended at a police naka. Five pistols and four live cartridges were seized from him.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused, along with his associate Davinderpal Singh alias Deepu and other gang members, was involved in sourcing illegal arms and ammunition from the Mathura region of Uttar Pradesh at low prices and distributing them across Jalandhar and adjoining areas, he added.
The SSP said further interrogation is underway to trace the entire supply chain and nab other accomplices.
