IGMC Shimla achieves milestone with first fully laparoscopic stomach cancer surgery

Shimla: The department of surgery at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, successfully performed a fully laparoscopic near-total gastrectomy for stomach cancer for the first time. The surgery, conducted on a 44-year-old female patient on Feb 2, involved the removal of 80–90% of the stomach using minimally invasive techniques. Only a small incision was made to extract the specimen. The complex operation lasted 5–6 hours and was completed without converting to open surgery. Post-surgery, the patient is stable and is expected to be discharged soon.
This is the first surgery of its kind in a govt hospital in north India, the doctors claimed on Wednesday. The procedure was conducted under the guidance of the head of the department, professor Dr Ved Sharma, and was led by Dr Vipan K Sharma, assistant professor of surgical gastroenterology, with a team including Dr Shubham Agrawal, Dr Ashish Katwal, and Dr Lakshya Bansal. The anaesthesia team was headed by Dr Manoj Pawar.
