Hamirpur to get modern Cancer Care Centre: Himachal chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu

Shimla: Himachal chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday inspected ongoing construction at Hamirpur Medical College, and announced plans for a modern Cancer Care Centre, along with nursing and dental colleges, within the campus. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 1,000 crore, and Sukhu emphasised that the development would bring quality healthcare closer to residents, reducing the need to travel outside the state for advanced treatment. He highlighted that the state govt is upgrading healthcare infrastructure across all medical colleges and major hospitals in Himachal Pradesh. With one of the highest cancer incidence rates in the country after the north-eastern states, Himachal Pradesh will benefit from a dedicated cancer hospital at Hamirpur, he added. Eleven new specialist departments were approved, covering medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, paediatric and women's cancers, pain management, pathology, stem cell and bone marrow transplants, anaesthesia, and radiology. This integrated set-up will allow patients to receive comprehensive cancer care within the state, saving time and expenses. Sukhu stressed the importance of systematic cancer screening, prevention, and timely diagnosis. He confirmed the establishment of a State Cancer Centre at Dr Radhakrishnan govt Medical College, Hamirpur, as part of the govt's commitment to strengthen healthcare services for the people of the state.
