Shimla: Himachal Pradesh governor Kavinder Gupta on Thursday visited the Bhakra Dam in Bilaspur district to review its power generation infrastructure and operational preparedness.Built on the Sutlej River, the Bhakra Dam is regarded as one of Asia's largest gravity dams and a major engineering achievement of independent India. Addressing officials, the Governor described Bhakra Dam as a symbol of modern India's development vision and said it continues to benefit millions of people in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. He also emphasised the need for water conservation and responsible management of natural resources amid growing global energy challenges, while praising the Bhakra Management Board for maintaining the vital infrastructure efficiently. During the visit, officials briefed the Governor about the dam' 's operational status, current water storage capacity, hydroelectric power generation and ongoing maintenance activities aimed at ensuring safety and efficient functioning. He was informed that the project continues to play a crucial role in supplying irrigation water, drinking water and electricity to several northern states. The Governor inspected the turbines and power stations inside the dam and reviewed the functioning of the power generation machinery.
