HISAR: A Jind-based man committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in Tohana of Fatehabad after his son married his maternal niece, who resides in Punjab. According to sources, the victim was harassed by the village panchayat after the incident. The deceased has been identified as 50-year-old Birbhan, a resident of Kucharana village in Jind district. Police have started an investigation after registering a criminal case against 25 persons, including the former sarpanch of Kucharana village.
Fatehabad police has registered a case on the complaint of deceased’s son Sushil, alias Shilu, against Kucharana village ex sarpanch Sheeshpal and several others under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
In the complaint to the police, Sushil said that his elder brother, Gurnam Singh, had a court marriage with Manpreet, a resident of Banarsi village of Sangrur district in Punjab, two months ago. Manpreet’s mother’s village is Kucharana, due to which Manpreet’s maternal uncle Sushil opposed this marriage and called a panchayat in the village. Apart from Sarpanch Sheeshpal alias Bholu, Ramesh Kumar, Satpal Foji, Anoop and many others were involved in the Panchayat and the body had put a lot of pressure on his family and vandalized their house too, he said.
“Disturbed by this, my father Birbhan left the house on the night of November 12 without informing anyone. The next day, on November 13, we received information about the suicide from Tohana police. A suicide note was also found from the pocket of my father,” Sushil said.
