Duo gets life term for Sangrur murder
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh district court sentenced two men to life imprisonment in connection with the 18-year-old murder case from Sangrur, Punjab, while acquitting two others due to lack of evidence. The convicts, Rakesh Kumar and Sanjay Chauhan, both residents of Sangrur, were found guilty, whereas co-accused Kiranjeet Singh and Kanwar Inderjit Singh were acquitted. The case dates back to 2007, when Harjeet Singh, a resident of Sangrur, was shot dead following a dispute linked to Sanjay Chauhan's Punjab Public School, located near Harjeet's home. Tensions escalated after Sanjay installed a cement pole in the alley leading to Harjeet's house, obstructing access and sparking repeated complaints from Harjeet. This ongoing conflict ultimately led to animosity between the parties.According to the prosecution, Rakesh Kumar shot Harjeet Singh using Sanjay Chauhan's pistol. The investigation also revealed that one of the accused was a lawyer, which contributed to delays in police proceedings. Seeking a fair trial, the victim's family petitioned the Punjab and Haryana High Court to transfer the case to Chandigarh. The case was subsequently moved to the Chandigarh district court in 2013.
