Cong protest unleashes chaos on city roads
Chandigarh: Heavy traffic snarls were witnessed at Madhya Marg on Friday noon, when Congress workers staged a protest in Sector 15, leaving motorists and evenb several ambulances stuck in jams. A large number of Punjab Congress workers gathered at Congress Bhawan in Sector 15 to protest against Punjab's govt and tried to gherao the Vidhan Sabha. This led to massive traffic jams, especially on Madhya Marg from PGI Chowk to Transport Light Point. Several ambulances carrying critical patients were seen stuck in the snarls, as both GMSH-16 and PGI are situated on Madhya Marg.
As congestion built up on Madhya Marg, internal roads of sectors 8, 9, 10, 11 and 15 were also clogged, and motorists spent one to two hours on the roads. With heavy chaos on Madhya Marg, many motorists diverted to the internal roads of these sectors, exacerbating the situation.In the absence of traffic lights, traffic police personnel attempted to manage traffic manually, but the situation did not ease till 3pm.Rajat Jain, a resident of Manimajra, said on his way home from PGI, he remained stuck in a jam on Madhya Marg for more than an hour. He added that there was massive traffic chaos on the internal roads too.Commuters complained of the recurrent inability of the traffic police to manage jams in such situations.
