Cong govt in Himachal facing instability and internal crisis: Thakur
Shimla: The Congress govt in Himachal Pradesh is functioning in an atmosphere of instability and fear despite holding a clear majority in the legislative assembly, claimed Jai Ram Thakur, the leader of opposition.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Thakur alleged that internal turmoil within the Congress reflected a serious crisis of trust in the ruling party.
The former chief minister said several leaders completed the formalities to file nominations for the March 16 Rajya Sabha election after being assured of party tickets, but the situation changed at the last moment, leading to resentment.
Referring to senior Congress leader and former Union minister Anand Sharma, Thakur said his public expression of anguish highlighted a lack of communication and respect within the party.
The senior leader said the BJP took a principled decision not to field a candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat, which gave the Congress an advantage.
Alleging that the state govt was being run by a "circle of friends" rather than the cabinet, Thakur said key decisions were taken by a limited group of close associates. He also questioned the Congress Rajya Sabha nominee, stating that the candidate's affidavit shows assets worth over Rs 230 crore while being described as an "ordinary worker".
Referring to the alleged illegal felling of trees in the Shillai area of Sirmaur district last week, the BJP leader claimed permission was granted for cutting only 25 trees, yet more than 300 trees were reportedly felled under political protection, and attempts were being made to dilute the investigation.
