April observed as Sikh Heritage Month across Canada, US, UK
Bathinda: April is being observed as Sikh Heritage Month across several countries, including Canada, the US and the UK, with public institutions and community bodies marking the occasion by recognising the Sikh community's history, values and contributions.Messages and outreach events have been organised in different countries to celebrate Sikh heritage and acknowledge the role of Sikh communities in public life.In Canada, minister for culture and official languages Marc Miller said Sikh Canadians, over nearly 120 years, have made significant contributions to the country's social, political, economic and cultural life. He said April offers an opportunity to highlight those contributions and recognise the Sikh values of equality, humility, generosity, compassion and seva.He also referred to Vaisakhi, to be observed this year on April 14, saying it commemorates the founding of the Khalsa and remains a key occasion for Sikh communities.Canadian MP Sukh Dhaliwal also marked the month, saying Sikh Canadians have played an important role in building stronger and more inclusive communities across the country.In the UK, the London Police Service also acknowledged Sikh Heritage Month and thanked the Sikh community for its contribution to making society "stronger, more inclusive and more vibrant".
The force's community wing also organised a session on Sikh faith, culture and lived experiences, saying such initiatives help build cultural awareness, strengthen community ties and promote more respectful and informed public engagement.The observance of Sikh Heritage Month has, over the years, become an important platform for recognising Sikh identity, history and public service in multicultural societies.
