5-day police custody for influencer murder case suspect after UAE deportation
Bathinda: Punjab Police have arrested Amritpal Singh Mehron, 31, the main accused in the 2025 murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, following his deportation from the UAE.Upon his arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport in the early hours of Friday, a police team took him into custody and brought him to Bathinda. He was produced before a court, which remanded him in police custody for five days, said DSP Sarabjit Singh Brar. Mehron had claimed responsibility for the killing of Kumari, 30, — better known online as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi. He cited anger over her alleged obscene social media content as his motive. He had warned Kumari to delete her videos and ordered her to stop using the name "Kaur", claiming her lifestyle disrespected the title. The body of Kumari was found in her car in the parking lot of Adesh University near Bathinda on June 11, 2025. The post-mortem report said she was strangled. While Mehron fled to the Middle East shortly after the crime, his three associates—Jaspreet Singh, Nimrat Jit Singh, and Ranjit Singh—were apprehended in India. In Jan 2026, Mehron was detained in Sharjah. After a Bathinda court declared him a proclaimed offender, a Red Corner Notice was issued. Punjab Police, working alongside central agencies, traced his location and successfully initiated extradition proceedings. The victim's family demanded the most stringent punishment for him. "He killed her only because he did not like the content she posted," said Kanchan's mother Girja Devi. A former mechanic with an ITI diploma, Mehron unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly elections as a SAD (Amritsar) candidate. Before turning to murder, he led a self-styled organisation called ‘Qaum De Rakhe,' which targeted influencers. He already faces two criminal cases for allegedly vandalising statues at Amritsar's Heritage Street in 2020 and threatening a music producer in Barnala in 2021. MSID:: 130167421 413 |
