The by-election results for seven assembly seats in six states declared on Friday were a mixed bag for the BJP and the opposition INDIA bloc, with the saffron party winning three seats and one each going to its rivals Congress, JMM and TMC and Samajwadi Party. The opposition alliance tasted victory in the Ghosi assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh, where it backed the Samajwadi Party, and in Jharkhand, where the JMM retained the Dumri assembly seat. UDF's Chandy Oommen wins Puthupally bypoll in Kerala, deals severe blow to ruling CPI(M)
Dealing a crushing blow to Kerala's ruling LDF, Congress candidate Chandy Oommen on Friday retained for the party-led UDF, the Puthuppally assembly seat, which his father and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy held for over half-a-century. Chandy Oommen trounced his main rival Jaick C Thomas of CPI(M) by a huge and historic margin in the bypoll. The 37-year-old Oommen defeated Thomas by a margin of 37,719 votes in the bypoll battle that saw a nearly month-long vigorous campaigning by leaders of the Congress, CPI(M), and BJP for their respective party candidates.

The BJP on Friday retained the Bageshwar assembly seat in Uttarakhand with its candidate Parwati Dass defeating Congress' Basant Kumar by more than 2,400 votes. Dass polled 33,247 votes while Kumar got 30,842 votes, Bageshwar District Magistrate and returning officer Anuradha Pal said. The BJP won by 2,405 votes, she declared.

JMM candidate Bebi Devi wins Dumri bypoll in Jharkhand.
JMM candidate Bebi Devi clinched Jharkhand's Dumri seat by over 17000 votes by defeating AJSU-P's Yashoda Devi. After the end of counting, Bebi finished with 1,35,480 votes where as Yashoda managed 1,18,380 votes. Bebi was incumbent JMM-Cong-RJD, part of India bloc candidate. The seat fell vacant after the death of her husband, Jagarnnath Mahto, who was also a minister Hemant Soren cabinet. NDA had fielded Yashoda against her.

JMM's Bebi Devi was leading by 6,536 votes over her nearest AJSU Party rival Yashoda Devi in the by-election to the Dumri Assembly seat in Jharkhand's Giridih district on Friday, officials said. After 18 rounds of counting, the JMM candidate, who is the INDIA bloc nominee, secured 72,042 votes, while the AJSU party candidate, an NDA nominee, got 65,506 votes, they said.

End of road for communists in Tripura: BJP after bypoll victories
The BJP hailed its victory in the bypolls to the Dhanpur and Boxanagar Assembly seats in Tripura on Friday and said it is the end of the road for the communists in the northeastern state, which was once known as a Left bastion. According to the Election Commission (EC), Tafajjal Hossain of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Boxanagar seat, which has around 66 per cent minority voters, by a margin of 30,237 votes. Hossain got 34,146 votes while Mizan Hossain of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) bagged 3,909 votes.

The counting of votes for the Ghosi assembly bypoll -- being seen as the first major electoral clash between the NDA and opposition bloc INDIA -- got underway at 8 am Friday, officials said. Alleging that the Election Commission did not take steps to prevent large-scale rigging in the Tripura by-elections, the CPM-led Left Front announced that it will boycott the counting of votes. The polling for the by-elections to the Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly seats in Sepahijala district was held on Tuesday. An average turnout of 86.50 per cent was recorded in the two seats. The Left Front alleged that large-scale rigging happened during the polling.
