NEW DELHI: In Odisha's Sundargarh district, Soumyamayee Behera, a seven-month pregnant woman and wife of Deben Behera from Jhirdapali village, was fatally shot by two unknown assailants, according to police reports. The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Tikayatpali police station.
Police investigations reveal that on Tuesday night, two unidentified individuals knocked at Soumyamayee's residence. Upon opening the door, the perpetrators forcibly took her gold jewellery and shot her when she attempted to call for help, as stated by a police officer.
Medical staff at a local hospital pronounced Soumyamayee dead upon arrival, confirmed the officer.
The authorities have dispatched a forensic team and dog squad to examine the crime scene, whilst investigations continue to apprehend the suspects, the police officer informed.
Deben recounted, "When I was sleeping in the bedroom last night, I heard a sound like the bursting of a bomb and woke up. When I went to check, I saw my wife lying on the floor in a pool of blood."
