Odisha's Maoist den now tourist hotspot
Once known more for Maoist domination than its mist-laden hills and cascading waterfalls, Koraput district has scripted a remarkable turnaround, drawing lakhs of tourists eager to experience its natural beauty and vibrant tribal heritage.
For decades, Maoist violence cast a shadow over Koraput, stalling development and keeping tourists away. However, with no major Maoist-related incidents reported in the district over the past few years, picturesque destinations like Deomali, Duduma and Rani Duduma waterfalls, Gupteswar, Galigabdar, Maliguda and the scenic valleys of the Eastern Ghats are once again bustling with visitors.
“The district has remained largely free from Maoist violence and this has played a crucial role in creating a favourable environment for tourism,” DIG of police (south western range) Kanwar Vishal Singh said.
Tourism statistics reflect this dramatic revival. According to Budhadev Budula, statistician at the district tourist office, Koraput welcomed 9.58 lakh (domestic) tourists in 2021. The number rose sharply in subsequent years, with 18.15 lakh in 2022, followed by 23.54 lakh in 2023 and 26.06 lakh in 2024.
The district administration has been quick to capitalise on the improved situation, making tourism infrastructure development a priority. Koraput collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan said the govt has drawn up an ambitious plan to further boost tourism. “Tourism spots across the district are being given a facelift.
Development of the Pondi ferry point is underway with a budget of Rs 10 crore and water sports facilities will also be introduced,” he added.
