Nepal Gen Z protests worry brethren in NIT Rourkela
Rourkela: Violent protests in Nepal has deeply shaken Nepali students studying at NIT-Rourkela.
“Nepal is going through a painful period of unrest. People are demanding meaningful change in governance, and sadly, this movement has already claimed precious lives,” said Bishnu Kant Mishra, a 4th-year mechanical engineering student from Lumbini, about 300km from Kathmandu. NIT-R has around 130 students from Nepal.
The protest, driven by Nepal’s youth against corruption and poor governance, has escalated into a nationwide crisis. “The movement succeeded in toppling the govt, but the cost is devastating,” said Ratik Rauniyar, a 3rd-year computer science student from Kathmandu. “Public property has been destroyed, and many teenagers lost their lives in clashes. What began as a fight for justice has turned into a national tragedy,” he added.
He said in the aftermath of the clashes several corrupt officials fled their posts and law enforcement agencies struggled to maintain order. “My family is safe but countless others are suffering,” he said.
Sasikant Hathi, a 3rd year electronics and communication student from Janakpur, expressed both grief and defiance. “This victory is written in blood — 19 lives lost, thousands injured. Yet the youth stood tall, and the corrupt throne of Nepal’s politicians collapsed,” he said.
Another student, requesting anonymity, urged restraint: “The govt has stepped down. I appeal to everyone to avoid vandalism and arson. Let’s protect our nation and move forward in peace.”
