Kendrapada: A 22-year-old man was arrested on Saturday on charges of raping a 17-year-old girl in Kendrapada district, nine days after the alleged crime took place following which the girl consumed poison.
The case came to light when the girl, after being discharged from the hospital, lodged an FIR on Friday. According to the complaint, the accused befriended the girl on social media and invited her to his house on Sept 10. Despite his mother’s insistence to drop the girl home, the youth allegedly took her to a secluded cashew field where he overpowered and raped her. He also reportedly assaulted her when she resisted and threatened to kill her if she disclosed about the incident to anyone.
Traumatised, the girl consumed poison upon returning home. Her parents rushed her to the hospital on the night of Sept 10, where she received treatment until being discharged on Sept 19. The accused was produced in court on Saturday, where his bail application was denied, and he was remanded to judicial custody.
