Cops detain man for bride’s abduction, rescue woman
Sambalpur: Police on Tuesday detained a man for the alleged abduction of a newly-wed bride at gun-point and rescued the woman from here.
The 19-year-old bride and the 26-year-old accused, natives of two nearby villages under Kantamal police limits in Boudh district were traced to a colony in Budharaja under Ainthapali police station.
Acting on a tip-off that the duo was staying at a relative’s house, Tarbha police from Subarnapur district, with assistance from Ainthapali police, conducted a late-night raid and apprehended the accused.
Both were taken to Tarbha police station for further inquiry. Police sources said the two were reportedly in a relationship, and SDPO (Sambalpur Sadar) Tofan Bag said the alleged abduction appeared to have taken place with the woman’s consent.
According to police, a wedding procession had arrived from Kamakshyanagar in Balangir district to Kantamal last Saturday for the woman’s marriage. After the ceremony, the bride was being taken to her in-laws’ house when the accused — allegedly her lover — along with some associates, intercepted the wedding vehicle near Tarbha in Subarnapur district, threatened the occupants with a firearm and took her away.
Following a complaint, Tarbha police registered a case and launched an investigation. Further inquiry is on.
