Berhampur: Two inmates of govt-run observation home for juvenile delinquents for boys here appeared for the annual high school examination that got underway on Thursday.
The boys appeared at the examination centres in Ganjam and Khurda and were escorted by police. “After completion of their exam, they returned to their observation home with police escort,” said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M.
The duo has been lodged in the home for the last six months after being detained in murder cases in their respective areas, said Rajashree Das, district child protection officer (DCPO), Ganjam.
A gang rape accused, who was lodged in the observation home will appear in the higher secondary or Plus II (commerce) exam that will start from Friday. He has also been lodged in the home since six months.
Santosh Mandal, in-charge superintendent of the home said, they have prepared for the examination with the guidance of the observation home’s teacher. Some staff of the home also helped them in their studies, provided them textbooks and notes. The HSC exam will be completed on March 2, while the Plus II exam will continue till March 25.
Similarly, 36 and 31 orphan students of Ganjam and Gajapati districts respectively appeared in the HSC examination. These students have been housed in different child care institutes. While in Ganjam, 19 boys and 17 girls appeared for the examination, 17 boys and 14 girls of Gajapati appeared for the examination, sources said. “We have engaged extra teachers for their examination preparation,” said Arun Kumar Tripathy, DCPO, Gajapati.
