Bhopal: What happens when some of the literary pieces de resistance are merged with the craft of the most refined film makers? Nothing short of sheer magic! Yes, this is what makes the winter film festival that is set to commence today (October 15) at Bharat Bhavan, a treat for the cinegoers.
The five-day festival would see some of the greatest maestros’ works, including that of Oscar award-winning Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Peter Brook, Basu Bhattacharya, Basu Chatterjee screened for the movie buffs. The cherry on the cake is that all the films that will be showcased here, are based on some of the most well-known literary classics written by the likes of Phanishwar Nath Renu, Rajendra Yadav, Munshi Premchand, Dharmavir Bharti and Maharshi Ved Vyas, said Premshankar Shukla, chief administrative officer of Bharat Bhavan. When asked if there are many takers for such classic films today, Shukla said, “Usually more crowds are seen at films that cater to masses in theatres, but we have endeavoured to curate festivals, which are based on themes. This time, we deliberately chose a bouquet of literary films because they are unique; especially when you speak about Peter Brook’s Mahabharata, a five-hour film, the entire package is so captivating and it can’t be described in words.”
In the last few years, there has been a steady rise in the number of people attending such festivals at Bharat Bhavan, said Shukla. He added , “Bhopali audience has given a thumbs up to such films, which are a pleasure to watch; there are so many youngsters who attend the shows every single day. Of course, it is a positive trend and we will not let the momentum break; so you can be rest assured of many different combinations at our upcoming film festivals. The entry to the festival is free.”
