Shikara rides at Upper Lake heading towards unregulated, unsafe waters
Bhopal: Tourists' dream of a safe Shikara ride at Upper Lake has run into troubled waters, triggering a debate over unregulated operations, lack of regulations and branding. Tourists describe a bitter experience as they board shabby imitations of the iconic Kashmiri boat run by private players, highlighting a growing menace of unregulated private vendors. In Dec last year, MPT launched 20 Shikara boats. Private operators quickly followed suit, converting their own boats into cheaper versions. MPT said ‘makeshift' Shikaras are undercutting their business and damaging tourist confidence. Pradeep Kumar, a local resident, shared his dismay: "We were thrilled for a traditional Shikara experience, but it turned out to be a rundown boat decked out with cheap, gaudy curtains. After shelling out good money, we felt utterly duped.""Tourists got confused because both MPT's official Shikara boats and these private ones operate from the same spot," said Kumar.Makeshift "Shikaras" are mushrooming across the Upper Lake. Private operators, evading official scrutiny, in a bid to cash in on the fame of Srinagar's penchant Shikaras.Riders said they often realize the fraud only after setting off on lower-cost Shikara, facing discomfort, overcrowding, and safety risks. On the other hand, MPT runs a fleet of premium Shikaras featuring cushioned seats, proper canopies, and skilled oarsmen, with rides priced at Rs 300 to 400. An MP Tourism official, speaking anonymously, lambasted the imposters: "These copycats are damaging our brand and shattering tourist confidence. They slash prices to undercut us while offering shoddy service, resulting in a flood of complaints that tarnish our image." "We have been following all safety norms in shikara," said MPT's PRO Vikas Khare. Since launch, MPT officials fielded dozens of grievances about these rogue boats, citing hazards like unstable vessels, excessive passengers, and surprise fare hikes. "Bhopal district administration should be pressed for rigorous safety inspections over boating in Upper Lake," said Vikram Kathait, a tourist. Upper Lake, a UNESCO-recognized Ramsar site, draws crowds for its scenic boat rides, but the proliferation of fakes threatens its appeal. District authorities have yet to respond to curb such practises at the lake.Tourists hope swift action will ensure their families do not face bad experiences. As summer peaks, the lake's waters—once a symbol of serenity—now mirror a battle over authenticity and safety.
