BHOPAL: After receiving complaints of student unrest at Barkatullah University (BU) campus, cops of Bagh Sewaniya police station descended on campus carrying plastic and PVC pipes as canes to maintain the law and order during the protest by students of BUIT. Around a dozen policemen including Bagh Sewaniya police station in charge Lalit Singh Dangur reached the administrative building to maintain the law and order. Shockingly, several policemen were carrying PVC pipes instead of canes. When contacted, Dangur said, "This is to tackle the situation if anything goes wrong." Asked if such pipes are not dangerous as the edges can cut students, he lost hs cool and replied: "There is nothing wrong in using pipes. We can use it." The cop also questioned presence of media on the campus. Dangur threatened a journalist of a vernacular daily saying he will throw him behind the bars. His only mistake was that he was clicking the pictures of the policemen carrying pipes in their hands. Dangur even directed his officials to seize his mobile phone. He was allowed to go only when that journalist called up his office to prove his identity. There were few policemen in civil dress also roaming on the campus carrying PVC pipes.
When contacted, SP (South) Anshuman Singh told TOI that policemen are provided with PVC canes. "PVC pipes are not provided to policemen. Few policemen might have been using it as it hurts less, but they are not provided officially to any policemen in the city."
