Chhatarpur woman kills ‘abusive’ husband, prays for forgiveness, surrenders to police
Bhopal: Driven to the brink by years of domestic abuse, a 27-year-old woman beat her husband to death on Monday in Chhatarpur’s Shiv Nagar Colony, waited beside his body for eight hours, and then visited a local temple to seek divine forgiveness before surrendering to the police.
The incident occurred around 10:00 am when the victim, Deendayal Kushwaha (30), a heavily intoxicated mason, forcibly entered the residence of his estranged wife, Neelam Kushwaha, by breaking the door latch. Deendayal reportedly grabbed Neelam by her hair, assaulted her, and hurled derogatory slurs against their seven-year-old daughter.
According to family members, Neelam retaliated with a wooden stick, repeatedly striking Deendayal even after he collapsed. He succumbed to head and leg injuries on the spot. Neelam, initially believing he had merely fainted, sat beside the body for nearly eight hours until her parents returned.
Following persuasion by her family, Neelam set out on foot to surrender. En route, she stopped at the city’s Hanuman temple, where she wept and prayed for ten minutes to seek forgiveness for the act. Around 8:00 pm, she walked into the Civil Lines police station and confessed to the killing.
Investigations revealed a long history of extreme domestic violence; Neelam had been living with her parents for five years and recently filed for divorce. Her family alleged that Deendayal frequently tortured their two minor children.
