Bhopal gets unified civic services hub with Atal Bhawan inauguration
Bhopal: Residents will now find all municipal services under one roof as the city’s administration shifts to its new headquarters, Atal Bhawan.
Inaugurated on Thursday by chief minister Mohan Yadav, the building is being hailed as a major step toward easing public access to government offices, with the mayor, officials, and every department of the municipal corporation now housed in one location.
The chief minister inspected the premises after the ceremony and praised its modern facilities. However, mayor Malti Rai flagged the absence of a municipal council hall, stressing that adjacent land under the public works department could be used for its construction. Acting on her suggestion, the chief minister summoned senior officials on the spot and directed them to expedite land allocation.
On this occasion, CM Mohan Yadav extended his congratulations to the people of Bhopal on the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC). He highlighted that Atal Bhawan—dedicated to the late former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who championed good governance and public service as the pillars of administration—will serve as a center for accessible, well-organized, and transparent civic services, embodying the spirit of good governance. Yadav further emphasized that this modern structure represents a renewed commitment to efficient administration, improved civic amenities, and the city’s ongoing development.
The inauguration drew a large gathering of public representatives, including BMC Sanskriti Jain, minister-in-charge Chaitanya Kashyap, ministers of state Krishna Gaur and Pratima Bagri, MLAs Rameshwar Sharma, Bhagwandas Sabnani, Vishnu Khatri and council chairperson Kishan Suryavanshi.
Built on a “green concept,” Atal Bhawan features a geothermal cooling system instead of conventional air-conditioning, aimed at reducing electricity consumption. A 300-kilowatt solar plant has also been installed on-site. Spread across 2.15 lakh square feet, the eight-storey building includes parking for 250 two-wheelers and 200 cars, six elevators, three staircases, and two fire exits.
BMC will further benefit from cheaper electricity through a solar project in Neemuch, where power will be supplied at 3.47 per unit for the next 25 years—nearly half the current rate. Developed under a public-private partnership model at a cost of 45 crore, the initiative is expected to save the corporation about 4 crore annually.
The inauguration also saw cultural and welfare initiatives. Shehnai players led by Kallu Bhai were honoured with incentives of 5,000 each. Beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana received house keys and allotment letters, while sanitation workers were equipped with PPE kits including raincoats, helmets, gloves, masks and reflective jackets.
