Barasingha at Boat Club: Residents taken aback like deer in headlights
Bhopal: On a serene Sunday morning, the usual calm of Bhopal's popular Boat Club was shattered by an extraordinary and unexpected encounter. Visitors out for a leisurely stroll or early jog were left wide-eyed and thrilled when a deer and a nilgai suddenly appeared, standing boldly right in front of them on the open grounds. The majestic nilgai, India's largest antelope, and the graceful swamp deer seemed unfazed by the growing crowd, creating a surreal moment straight out of the wild. Excitement rippled through the onlookers as smartphones were whipped out in unison. People snapped countless photos and videos, capturing the animals' poised stances against the backdrop of the Upper Lake. Laughter and gasps filled the air, with families and fitness enthusiasts alike buzzing about the rare urban wildlife intrusion. "It was like a scene from a nature documentary, right in the heart of the city!" exclaimed Atul Ray, one witness. Sensing the potential danger to both the animals and visitors, quick-thinking bystanders wasted no time. Several individuals promptly alerted forest officials, ensuring a swift response. After sometime, a team from the nearby Van Vihar rushed to the scene. The officials, experienced in such rescues, approached cautiously to avoid startling the creatures. After a careful assessment, the team confirmed that the deer and nilgai had accidentally wandered out of the Van Vihar enclosure sometime during the night or early hours. "Sometime these wild animals from Van Vihar ventured into nearby areas accidently. This happens mostly when water level goes down as they move easily. They have been rescued," said director Van Vihar Vijay Kumar. Likely drawn by the scent of greenery or simply a momentary lapse in fencing, the animals had ventured into the urban fringe. With practiced efficiency, the rescuers guided them back to safety, preventing any mishaps. This heartwarming yet startling incident serves as a reminder of Bhopal's unique blend of urban life and biodiversity, thanks to sanctuaries like Van Vihar. Officials urged the public to report such sightings promptly and avoid approaching wildlife.
