40 city schools record zero RTE admissions in 1st phase
Bhopal: In a stark revelation exposing gaps in the Right to Education (RTE) Act implementation, around 40 prominent CBSE-affiliated and MP Board schools in Bhopal have recorded zero admissions from the reserved quota for disadvantaged children. This comes even as the first phase of admissions concluded on April 15, with 1200 private schools across Madhya Pradesh falling short of the mandatory 25% reservation threshold. The RTE Act mandates private unaided schools to allocate 25% of entry-level seats to children from economically weaker and underprivileged sections, with the government reimbursing fees via direct online transfers. Yet, sources point to a glaring absenteeism: eligible children cleared for document verification simply failed to show up for formalities, leaving seats vacant in the capital's top institutions.Statewide, the first phase saw robust participation initially. Out of 178,714 children verified, a lottery allocated seats to 106,051—54,746 boys and 51,305 girls—in their preferred schools. Parents received SMS alerts to complete admissions, but follow-through has been dismal in elite setups. All 40 zero-admission schools in Bhopal are renowned CBSE and MP Board outfits, known for their high fees and competitive edge. The State Education Centre has now publicized the list of underperforming schools to ignite action. A senior official issued a stern warning: "Schools refusing or delaying admissions will face strict penalties. Parents must lodge complaints immediately with the District Project Coordinator (DPC) office."School managements counter that allocations remain unfilled due to "no-shows" by parents, not deliberate defiance. However, officials insist on strict compliance to fulfill RTE's equity promise, bridging the divide between privilege and poverty. With the first phase closed, hope lingers in the second round, set to kick off after April 20. This fresh lottery targets residual vacancies, offering a second shot to children missed earlier. Previous applicants can revisit the online portal, check school-wise openings, and submit updated preferences. The process aims to plug holes in the system.Madhya Pradesh's renewed push highlights its commitment to RTE amid persistent hurdles, especially in urban elite circles. Bhopal's top schools, long criticized for lukewarm embrace of the law, now face the heat. As the clock ticks, will they step up to fill their quotas and honor the Act's spirit? Or will implementation gaps widen, undermining the dream of inclusive education? The episode raises tough questions on awareness, accessibility, and accountability. While rural outreach has improved, urban apathy persists. Education activists demand vigilant monitoring, helplines for parents, and faster reimbursements to ease school burdens. For now, the state watches closely, determined to enforce the law's letter and intent.
